I don't know why it sticks in my head that the minimum top up is 6£.Your 3£ is refundable at the end of your trip but you won't get back any money you have left on the card..so save it for yur NEXT...

I think that is what I'd do. To buy the Oyster at LHR you would have to stand on line at the ticket window, whereas you could just purchase the tube ticket from a machine and be on your way. Might be...
